The Phoenix is commonly associated with the mythological creature made up of many different birds and animals (in Egyptian, Greek, Western etc mythologies) but Hsiung more specifically refers to the Chinese feng huang in this piece. Coincidentally, this is also her mother’s birth name. The bird represents the sky and cosmos, but Hsiung also reckons that the painting bore resemblance to the symmetry of birds.
