For Decades is a series reflecting on Singapore’s past general elections. It isolates fragments from an archival image of a 1976 lunchtime rally at Fullerton Square, focusing on the people in the crowd and highlighting the role of citizens. The use of aluminum as a printing surface symbolizes the rigidity of the state’s democratic framework, while its reflective quality invites viewers to confront their own actions and choices.
Originally exhibited at Schoolhouse Studios in Melbourne in 2019, the installation featured seven prints arranged throughout the space to create an immersive experience. The layout encouraged viewers to move through the space, evoking the feeling of being part of a rally. Each print, mounted on tilted stands, represented a message for the audience to reflect upon, while the final blank print symbolized the “future” and citizens’ role in shaping democracy.

For Decades
For Decades is a series reflecting on past general elections in Singapore. By isolating fragments of an archival image of a 1976 lunchtime rally at Fullerton Square, the work centers on the people in the crowd, highlighting our role as citizens. First exhibited at Schoolhouse Studios in Melbourne in 2019, this installation originally featured seven prints scattered through the space. (Two of the prints are no longer available.) The arrangement invites viewers to contemplate the images and, by moving through the space, evokes the feeling of joining a rallying crowd. Mounted on tilted stands, each print gestures towards an exchange, a message for the audience to receive and reflect upon. The final, cleared print symbolises the ‘future’ ‒ an open-ended reminder of citizenry’s role in shaping democratic governance. The dispersed layout encourages a sense of movement and engagement that echoes the spirit of the rallies.
