Born and based in Shanghai, China, Wang Yi (b. 1991) is most known for painting large, vibrant geometric patterns that reflect intensive understanding of chromatic variation to create hypnotic illusions of movement and depth. He takes the traditional method of oil glazing to a masterful level, applying his rigorous methodologies across all his mesmerising paintings. Inspired largely by Frank Stella and Victor Vasarely, Wang Yi uses his practice to navigate the middle ground between Western aesthetics and Chinese philosophy. This results in a beautiful layering of philosophical contradiction between contemporary understanding of Minimalism and the traditionalistic labour and humanity of Chinese painting. Such reflects mankind’s relentless pursuit for perfection.

Wang Yi completed his BA and MA in Oil Painting at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China in 2013 and 2016 respectively. He is a prolific maker and has consistently participated in numerous local and international exhibitions this past decade, notably Duende Contemporary Art Museum Foshan, Minsheng Art Museum Shanghai, Walker Art Centre Minneapolis, China Academy of Art Museum Hangzhou and at the Chengdu Museum of Contemporary Art.
